Estate Sale Season: What I Learned at My First Sale of the Year

Estate sale season is back, and if you're anything like me, that means weekends spent hunting for unique vintage treasures! No matter how many sales I’ve been to, each one teaches me something new. At my first estate sale of the season, I was reminded of a few key things that can make or break your experience. Whether you're a seasoned thrifter or new to estate sales, these tips will help you make the most of your next hunt.

1. Wear Comfortable Clothes (That Can Get Dirty!)

Estate sales aren’t always glamorous. Sometimes you're digging through basements, attics, and garages filled with dust, cobwebs, and forgotten treasures. Wear something comfy that you don’t mind getting a little dirty—you’ll thank yourself later!

2. Bring a Flashlight

Some of the best finds are tucked away in dimly lit corners, basements, or even under furniture. A small flashlight (or your phone's flashlight) can help you spot hidden gems and inspect items more closely for cracks or damage before you buy.

3. Take a Reusable Bag (or Two!)

Most estate sales don’t provide bags, and if you’re grabbing multiple small items, you’ll want an easy way to carry them as you walk through the house. A sturdy tote or reusable shopping bag is a lifesaver!

4. Walk Through Twice

The first walk-through is usually about spotting the obvious treasures, but a second (or even third) pass lets you see things you might have missed the first time. A change in perspective or a slower walk through the rooms often reveals pieces you overlooked.

5. Make Deals!

Estate sale hosts want to clear out items, so don’t be afraid to negotiate—especially if it’s later in the sale. Bundle items together and ask if they’ll take a lower price. More often than not, they’re happy to work with you.

Final Thoughts

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of an estate sale—finding pieces with history, getting great deals, and adding character to your home. Every sale is a new adventure, and these little lessons make the hunt even more fun.

Have you been to an estate sale yet this season? What’s your best tip? Let me know in the comments!
